Summary: Chocolate was first noted in Europe from our well known, Christopher Columbus, on his 4th and final trip to America. He was expecting to be given something expensive to be given by the Indians, but instead they just came him a handful of shriveled almonds. It may not seem seem like a big then, but as time when on, this turned out to something so powerful than money or power, and that is just because of its taste. Today, chocolate is everything, because everyone loves it! Not much people know this, but chocolate has a second name of Theobroma, which means the elixir of the gods and is capable of making $60 billion dollars. Woah!
In Paris there are places, such as Club des Croquerurs de Chocolat, that are made just for tasting chocolate! In this place there are people who believe that chocolate are just as important as life, and would give it up for even oxygen. (Crazy...) In the place the people would make try to make every nuance out of chocolate, such as adding on a different flavor surface. And out of everything they tried, there was not such thing as a nasty piece of chocolate, always having responses of delight and moans such as "Ah, oui" or "Oouuiiii". Of course in America, we would say something like "Mmmm!" Speaking of America, we are not exposed to many types of chocolate as other countries are. As kids would eat Hershey bars, M&Ms, or maybe some non-name brand dull tasting chocolate, but that is not really much. Unlike in France, there is chocolate such as the palet d'or square, which may looksimple but it inside this square piece is actually a circle of creamy dark filling. In addition to that, there is the ganache which is a thin, hard covering of silky smooth chocolate. But the recommended best is said to be the palet'd which is made by all the best chocolate, its rapper is even signed with gold by the creator. Not only France has this but so much more things, but when we compare America to them, we are ignorant in the arts of chocolate.
Despite chocolate is not only popular amoung Humans but bacteria as well, they are targeted alot amoung insects and diseases who comes and attack their pods. This is something that can not only hinder its growth but as will stop kill off the bean completely. (Gah!) This happened in Brazil once, in the begining of 1989 called the witches'-broom plauge. This not only just killed the cocoa growing in the area butdrove out all the cacoa business in Brazil.
Quote: "Those almondlike cacao beans that the grand Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus named Theobroma-elixir of the gods-are the basis of a $60 billion industry." (Rosenblum 1)
Reaction: I only had one word to say to this, and that is: "Wow". I did not know chocolate can be such a money cow, who knows how much money companies make off of that yearly. Owner of companies like Herseys or Kit-Kats are probably running around with a billions of dollars with probably houses bigger than Bill Gates! Although I cannot help to wonder though, who did give chocolate the name Theobroma. Is it just chocolate with the term of Theobroma or cocoa seeds as well, I wonder how it tastes alone. Maybe like peanuts, you can just grow them and eat them still having that taste in peanut butter!
